Opioid Overdose

Although many people who overdose go to the emergency department, comparatively few are admitted to the hospital. These data show hospitalizations related to opioid overdose.

Number of Hospitalizations Related to Opioid Overdose, 2021

Key Findings: In 2021, 581 people were hospitalized for opioid overdoses related reasons. The peak in hospitalization that occurred in 2006 is consistent with the fentanyl outbreak that occurred at the time.

Hospitalizations Related to Opioid Overdose by Age Category

Key Findings: Males consistently represent a larger percentage of those being hospitalized for opioid overdose-related causes.

Key Findings: Males consistently represent a larger percentage of those being hospitalized for opioid overdose-related causes.

Hospitalizations Related to Opioid Overdose by Race/Ethnicity

Key Findings: White, non-Hispanic individuals are the predominate race/ethnicity group being hospitalized for opioid overdose related causes.

Key Findings: In 2021, most individuals with hospitalizations for opioid overdose-related causes were from the 19134 ZIP code.

Opioid Use or Dependence

These data show hospitalizations occurring in Philadelphia among people with diagnoses of opioid use or dependence.  The primary diagnosis or reason for hospitalization is often something other than opioid use or dependence.  Sepsis, cellulitis, endocarditis, diabetes, mood disorders, pneumonia, and other respiratory diseases, or acute kidney disease are all reasons people with co-occurring diagnoses of opioid use or dependence might be hospitalized.

Key Findings: In 2021, 8,631 people were hospitalized with diagnoses of opioid use or dependence.

Hospitalizations Related to Opioid Use or Dependence by Age Category

Key Findings: Among people hospitalized with diagnoses for opioid use or dependence, the predominate age group in 2021 were those between the ages of 35-44 years.

Hospitalizations Related to Opioid Use or Dependence by Sex

Key Findings: Among people hospitalized with diagnoses of opioid use or dependence, males are consistently hospitalized more than females.

Hospitalizations Related to Opioid Use or Dependence by Race and Ethnicity

Key Findings: The predominate race/ethnicity group being hospitalized with diagnoses for opioid use or dependence are White, non-Hispanic individuals.

Key Findings: Among people hospitalized with diagnoses of opioid use or dependence, most are on public insurance.

Key Findings: In 2021, most individuals with hospitalizations for opioid use or dependence were from the 19134, 19124, and 19140 ZIP codes

Cocaine Use

These data show hospitalizations occurring in Philadelphia among people with a diagnosis of cocaine use or dependence.  Often, the primary diagnosis or reason for hospitalization is something other than cocaine use or dependence.   Some examples of reasons for hospitalization among people who also have a diagnosis of cocaine use or dependence include sepsis, heart disease, mood disorders, and respiratory diseases such as pneumonia.

Number of Hospitalizations Related to Cocaine Use or Dependence

Key Findings: In 2021, there were 7,159 hospitalizations occurring among people with a diagnosis of cocaine use or dependence. The peak of hospitalizations among people with a diagnosis of cocaine use or dependence occurred in 2006 with 9,506 hospitalizations.

Hospitalizations Related to Cocaine Use or Dependence by Age Category

Key Findings: In 2021, the predominate age group being hospitalized with a diagnosis of cocaine use or dependence were those between the ages of 45-54 years.

Key Findings: Among people hospitalized with a diagnosis of cocaine use or dependence, males are consistently hospitalized more than females.

Key Findings: Black, non-Hispanic individuals are the predominate race/ethnicity group being hospitalized with a diagnosis of cocaine use or dependence.
